Why are you interested in Students Speak Out?
It is imperative that we LISTEN to young people. They know what is wrong with the system even if they have trouble articulating it. Social Networking sites like this allow young people to use their narrative voice. The narrative is the most powerful form of communication in my opinion. There is nothing more authentic than speaking from the heart especially when it relates to education.

The World at Your Fingertips

Last week I was in Medford Oregon doing a workshop for their school district. As I was flying to Seattle for my connecting flight back to Minneapolis, I saw the Pacific Ocean for the first time. See attached photo. It was beautiful of course. What occured to me was just how quickly we can change our perceptions of the world through travel. So often, I am in new places with new people. I've met the most interesting people on planes. My point here is that travel requires you to open to new experie… Continue

p.s. I just read your profile again. Watch for videos coming to that page from the Student Leaders... Talk about narrative voice!!!

The students will take all the stories and videos and summarize what they learn from them -- the goal is to define a public policy problem for themselves (as opposed to having it defined from an adult perspective and then asking students to reinforce that perspective). Then they be working together to propose their own solutions.

Tiffany -- There is a lot happening at Students Speak Out. Go to the SSO Goes Alternative Group page. Brian's story is interesting, and possibily related to your work. It's about how the bathrooms in traditional schools are awful (no doors, sinks that don't work), but how in his alternative school it is exactly the opposite. He brought it up in the context of why he even bothers to go to school! I just thought of you when I read it. I think you could get some interesting insights from him and other students in that Group. Hope you're well!!!

Yes, I was there. It gave me a lot to think about and really influenced my present work. I do wish there had been more time with the youth panel and that it was one of the first presentations instead of the last.

Tiffany -- I think you were at an Education Evolving meeting last year which I attended (I also consult for EE and arranged the student panel for that day.)

Thanks. There is so much knowledge on this site. The site itself shows the power of technology...young and old, different cultures all talking. Great
