- Why are you interested in Students Speak Out?
- It is imperative that we LISTEN to young people. They know what is wrong with the system even if they have trouble articulating it. Social Networking sites like this allow young people to use their narrative voice. The narrative is the most powerful form of communication in my opinion. There is nothing more authentic than speaking from the heart especially when it relates to education.

The World at Your Fingertips
Last week I was in Medford Oregon doing a workshop for their school district. As I was flying to Seattle for my connecting flight back to Minneapolis, I saw the Pacific Ocean for the first time. See attached photo. It was beautiful of course. What occured to me was just how quickly we can change our perceptions of the world through travel. So often, I am in new places with new people. The students will take all the stories and videos and summarize what they learn from them -- the goal is to define a public policy problem for themselves (as opposed to having it defined from an adult perspective and then asking students to reinforce that perspective). Then they be working together to propose their own solutions.
