MAYOR RYBAK ASKS FOR FEEDBACK: Preventing Youth Violence in Minneapolis

Have you seen that SSO’s newest member is Minneapolis Mayor, R.T. Rybak? And he’s asking YOU to tell him your views on the plan for Preventing Youth Violence in Minneapolis. Whether you’re on SSO all the time, or are someone who has never commented, this is a big opportunity to share your ideas with a policymaker who is actively looking for your input.

You can see the entire plan at this link: http://www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/communications/docs/blueprint-for-a...

A very brief overview is:

The Youth Violence Prevention Steering Committee’s Blueprint for Action to Prevent Youth Violence recognizes that youth violence is a public health epidemic that requires a holistic, multi-faceted response that aims to achieve four goals:

• Connect every youth with a trusted adult,

• Intervene at the first sign that youth are at risk for violence,

• Restore youth who have gone down the wrong path, and

• Unlearn the culture of violence in our community.

What are your thoughts about the goals?

Are these the “right” goals for preventing youth violence?

What, from your perspective, are the most impt goals?

What is your best idea for preventing Youth Violence in Minneapolis?

Tell Mayor Rybak today!

I love what the Mayor has done and i feel that it will take a lot more efforts to end youth violence. I volunteer at Brian Coyle Center at Cedar-Riverside and i am disappointed to say that these young people need resources to get them off the streets. As a result these very young people come into the U of M west bank campus where they stir up trouble. Trouble such as misuse of the public computer labs and a record high theft rate. As a result the somali students at the u of m including me have been subjected to racial profiling. The UMPD are quick to assume that all Somali's are criminals which gets in the way of our learning. I personally went to the U of M to get a higher education not to be labeled and racial profiled. I believe the best way to end youth violence is to go to these youth and ask them what they want.

I like the idea of step-up program it really helped me, but what about the other students who's English isn't up there? Those very same students are the one's who end up getting into trouble over the summer break.

AGAIN WE NEED MORE FACILITIE AND PROGRAMS TO KEEP THESE YOUNG BUSY. WE CAN'T LEAVE THEM AND EXPECT THEM TO NOT GET INTO TROUBLE WIT THE LAW.

Besides a lot of young people see law enforcement officers as the enemy so the best thing we should do as a city is to have maybe couple of days out the week where the police officers come into the neighborhood and talk with these youth and even play basketball with them:)

Just some of my thoughts...

Salma -- Thank you! I just for the first time saw all the people you got to join the Students Speak Out group on Facebook. I wonder, would you send a message to them to come and join this Web site and also provide feedback to Mayor Rybak? It is an excellent opportunity to share their voice!

I think these goals are very well planned out, I see a problem coming up with funding, and up keep in the programs offered once it is established. Like stated in the plan, too many times have I seen programs that are KEY to keeping youth out of trouble, healthy, and safe loose funding once we get the ball rolling. Or, we are not working to prevent the problem and the issue just continues and we are spending more money than needed.
I think something not looked at as much as should be, is ALC's. These schools have turned lives around and have not giving up on their students. These schools can be a very important part in helping out students who are at risk. We need to have school options that are not difficult to come accross so the busy parents will know about the option, and have students know positive information about them when they are applying to high schools and middle schools. Like stated in the overview, Minneapolis Public Schools will play a very big role in the success of the program, but ALC's would be a great addition to help increase a good outcome.

I am very grateful to what some goodhearted people have on their minds to help kids today.I think that the efforts to make kids feel more at home, at school. these adults really care about the lives of these kids today. And I greatly appreciate it. thanks to everyone who has something to do with this.
