Tell us a little about yourself.
Hey everybody! My name is Holly and I'm a freshman at Avalon Charter School in Saint Paul. School rocks, and I feel totally blessed to be learning in such an open, encouraging, supportive enviorment. At home I have my mom, dad, and big bro Geoffrey, who is the best sibling ever! My two collie dogs Lassie and Sadie are my best friends in the world, just cause they're so awesome and huggable. There's also my two horse buddies, Leo and Reddy, who are the coolest dudes around! I'm going to be at Avalon for my freshmen year, and most likely for the who shebang. After high school I hope to attend a college and graduate with a biology and an ecology degree. I want to put together and give presentations in national parks around the united states, and then teach middle school students about our amazing, complex web of life. I love writing on the side, and hope to have a book published before I keel over from old age. I am a total vintage country music nut. Johnny Cash, Randy Travis, Ernest Tubb- the whole gang. I've played piano for eight years and love rocking out on the keys. No matter what I do when I get older, I want it to be something that helps other people, other animals, and especially our world, which, hey, we all depend on, right?
Why are you interested in Students Speak Out?
I feel that SSO is an awesome community-based electronic idea where students can have their say in important topics that really influence us, not just our parents. There is such a stereotype out there that lumps all teenagers together, in the "wierd-ones group" and I really hope to help change that. Being a teen is a great time to get involved in your community, and to really show other people what your true colors are!

January Brings the snow... makes your feet and fingers glow!

School's getting pretty hectic this month. My involvement in the school play, The Mouse Trap, a murder mystery by the brilliant Agatha Cristie, has shortened my evenings considerably. It's going to be a great performance, though, and I'm really looking forward to it.

I'm considering volunteering my time after school and on weekends next block at Sunrise Assisted Living home in Roseville. It is so much fun talking with the residents, playing games, and entertaining them with my…

Happy New Year!

It seems like 2007 blew by so quickly! I guess that just means that I had a good year, 'cause you know what they say: time flies when you're having fun! School is going really well. I just completed a block-long independent project on Greg Mortenson and the Central Asia Institute, which builds and funds schools for boys and girls in remote sections of Afghanistan and Pakistan. With the help of my whole school, I ran a fundraiser that raised $483 for the Institute. It was a completely gratifyi…

December 10

Hey everyone! School's going really awesome this year, and this week I finished an all-school fundraiser that raised over $300 for the Central Asia Institute's Pennies for Peace program. All that money will go to children in very remote regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan, so girls and boys can go to school. Have you read Three Cups of Tea? It's an awesome book co-written by Greg Mortenson, founder of the CAI. Check it out! Birthday's com… Continue

Holly -- please make sure to check out the new R.T. Rybak post and respond! Request to be his friend, too, please. We want to hook him on the power of SSO. Boost his excitement about it so he'll keep coming back!

Hi Holly. Two things:

1. We had a drawing, and you won the video camera for the bullying group! Congrats! Would you send me your address, please, (in the "send a message" -- don't post personal info on the comment wall)? We'll send to you right away. Also, are you cool with us telling people "Holly from Avalon" won on the main page?

2. I've got to pull your and Brett's video off the MN Contest page. ONLY because Best Buy is now the sponsor (and the prize is Best Buy stuff and not Target stuff). What do you think about redoing the video to say as much? I

Hey Holly can you call me ASAP? I tried your house, but it was busy. Nothing super urgent, but the sooner we talk the better.
Thanks!
